Week 2: Taking about activities and professions
"What do you do?" and "What are you doing?"
These two questions look and sound very similar, but they have completely different meanings in English! Here is a simple guide to help you understand and answer both questions.
1. "What do you do?" = Your Job or Routine
People ask this when they want to know your profession or what you do every day. They are asking about your general life, not what is happening at this exact moment.
When to use it: To talk about jobs, school, or daily habits.
How to answer: Use simple present tense.
Examples of how to answer:
I am a student.
I am a doctor.
I work at a bank.
I study English at the university.
2. "What are you doing?" = Right Now
People ask this when they want to know what action is happening at this exact moment.
When to use it: To talk about right now, today, or this minute.
How to answer: Use "I am" + an action word ending in -ing.
Examples of how to answer:
I am eating lunch.
I am studying English.
I am watching TV.
I am talking to my friend.
